About

What is the purpose of Forward Staunton? We are a non-partisan Staunton group advocating for transparent local government and fact-based policy and decision-making, the foundation of a thriving community. As such, we focus on Staunton infrastructure, Staunton economic development, Staunton schools, and Staunton social services. We do all of this with an eye toward inclusion, racial equity, and social justice. Although we have a local focus, there are times where we are compelled to act when a national or state issue calls us to participate in working towards a more perfect society. We also highlight the work of other local citizen groups by serving as a platform to share information and coordinate efforts.

What are the benefits of local government transparency and accountability? Our community thrives at all levels and in all sectors when local government is working for the people it serves. Transparency strengthens our democracy, letting our citizens know what their elected leaders are doing. Accountability creates trust, in knowing that our leaders are obligated to seek the best interests of the people they serve, and not themselves or their donors. Transparency and accountability together foster civic engagement. As government leaders and citizens work in sync to solve everyday problems and make decisions, efficiency and effectiveness are brought forward.

Who are the leaders of Forward Staunton? We are members of the Staunton community. We come from all walks of life and career backgrounds; what knits us together is that we share a love for this City and its people and want to see Staunton thrive. This is why we volunteer our time to this group.

What kinds of issues does Forward Staunton get involved in? In 2020, the issues we tackled included the 2A sanctuary city public hearing, the Augusta County courthouse proposal, and a request for a public comment period to be added to Blue Ridge Criminal Justice Board meetings. Looking forward, we anticipate addressing persistent long-term matters such as economic development on the west end of Staunton, and anti-racism and racial equity work. Our ears and eyes will be on the ground to identify and highlight any matter that compels us to speak out for the well-being of all Staunton citizens and to preserve all that makes Staunton a remarkable city.

What methods of advocacy does Forward Staunton utilize? The primary ways we alert Staunton citizens to key and pressing issues are through emails, Facebook, YouTube, our website, and NewsLeader ads. We encourage citizens to use their voices to be heard, whether through voting, joining local community boards, writing letters to the editor, posting on social media, contacting City leaders, attending City Council meetings and other local government meetings, peaceful protesting, etc. Forward Staunton has volunteers dedicated to attending and reporting on City Council meetings and various Commission meetings. If needed, we will use Freedom of Information requests to ensure maximum transparency.

Where does Forward Staunton get its funding? We depend on the generosity of our local citizens. No money is accepted from outside groups. Funds are
used to cover the costs of newspaper ads and Freedom of Information requests.

What local government entities does Forward Staunton engage with? We primarily direct our advocacy towards our elected members of Staunton City Council, which includes the Mayor. There may be times where we encourage outreach to a City board or Commission.
